I Bought an Airplane

Words about airplane ownership and flying.

Oshkosh 2023 Aviators Notes

I wanted to log some details about the flight out here to Oshkosh.  The flight was about 1820 miles with a total time of fifteen hours and 38 minutes.. It could have been shorter except for some detours we had to make for weather.  The route we took was very scenic and I was told by another pilot friend, Kim Muinch that we indeed did take the most scenic route.

I mentioned how much fuel I used in previous posts, but I am calculating it at 129 gallons – with an average of 8.32 gallons per hour.  I had an oil change 4.4 hours before the trip, and during the trip I added 3 quarts of oil. This amount of oil was higher than my usual consumption rate.  After discussing this with an A&P here at Oshkosh, I discovered that it was because I was running my engine almost to red-line RPM (which is 2700) during the flight to try to keep up with John’s plane almost the whole way.

I’ll try to track similar numbers on the way back.  I expect the numbers to increase a bit because of going back against the wind.
